Wow wow wow wow wow. Hands down the most exceptional antique locket I've ever had the pleasure of handling. Where to start? The shape is perfect. A hunky pebble that cupped in your hand or hanging at your collar bone feels like a slice of heaven. Perfectly proportioned and domed, she's magic.
Then the colour - a deep and butter-melting-on-toast yellow - she is EXACTLY what collectors want from their antique yellow.
And then the detailing; ENAMEL. In NAVY. Navy on gold. It's perfect. The large large contains a pearl that gives her glow an extra dimension. Then the enamel star is echoed in another star motif etched in the gold itself. The stars compliment and glimmer in the light.
To her back we have yet more etching and a shield motif; for protection, strength, and resilience.
She bears her original inscription. For me that is a huge win, I love that very literal connection to her history. Gifted to Mary Boyd she bears the date 24th April 1872 making her 154. Given her age her condition is near unbelievable. As good as she could be for something that lived through most of Queen Victoria's reign.
