Antique Niello Elongated Curb Guard Chain with Original Dog Clip (60")
Antique Niello Elongated Curb Guard Chain with Original Dog Clip (60")
GUYS. I almost peed when I found this; I snatched it so fast you barely saw it move. A year-defining find imo.
Guard chains are always in demand, but this one is seriously something else. The links are elongated curb, alternating with rose-gold plated silver and black enamel-light enamel banded silver. The contrast between the two is extraordinary: warm blush gold and rich, inky black, repeating the full length of a long guard. It photographs beautifully and it wears even better.
Niello is one of those techniques that never gets the attention it deserves. It's an ancient metalworking process, thousands of years old, made from an alloy of sulphur ground to powder, packed into engraved recesses in the metal, and fired until it fuses. The result is that dense, permanent, almost velvety black. It is not paint, it is not oxidisation, it is not going anywhere. Egyptian goldsmiths used it. Medieval craftsmen used it. By the Victorian era it was being used extensively in Russian and Middle Eastern silversmithing, and pieces made with it have this incredible visual weight that you simply cannot fake or replicate with modern finishing techniques.
The dog clip clasp is niello too - quite often we see niello chains have had their clasps replaced so getting an original is delicious.
A guard this length gives you real options. Wear it long and loose as it was originally intended, doubled up as a shorter, chunkier chain, or wrapped at the wrist if you're feeling adventurous. It's the kind of piece that works with everything from a white shirt to full evening dress and look so casually chic.

Please note
The expectation with antique and vintage jewellery is that there will be normal signs of wear commensurate with age eg. scuffs and patina. Lovers of antique and vintage jewellery usually value these things for giving their piece history and character.
I make every effort to clearly list any defects above usual wear, and to take clear photos that represent the item clearly.
The photos constitute part of the description and we ask you view them carefully before purchasing.
