Trends come and go, tastes change, entire jewellery styles fall in and out of favour, and yet somehow the heart padlock just keeps going. Looking at this beautiful antique example, it is not difficult to see why.

Hallmarked in Birmingham in 1909, this little treasure has already celebrated well over a century of life. Think about that for a moment. It was made when Edward VII was on the throne, before commercial air travel, before television, before most of the modern world existed at all. Yet here it is, still every bit as wearable and desirable as the day it left the workshop.

Most of the time I find 9ct gold examples; it is unusual for me to be blessed by finding a high-carat example - especially 15ct (the rarest of all!) so this is super collectible. 

What I particularly love about antique padlocks is the softness they develop with age. Decades of careful handling seem to mellow the gold. The smooth buttery surface catches the light beautifully.

The proportions are wonderful too. Not so large that it overwhelms a chain, but with enough presence to hold its own amongst a collection of charms. I can already picture it nestled amongst chunky antique links, quietly stealing all the attention.
