Victorian 15ct Gold Garnet Quatrefoil & Pearl Star Pendant
Victorian 15ct Gold Garnet Quatrefoil & Pearl Star Pendant
This spectacular Victorian jewel came to me as a ring, but on closer inspection it was clear that the ring conversion was neither original nor especially sympathetic. The delicate construction simply had not been designed for the knocks and pressure of everyday wear on the hand. I strongly suspected it had begun life as a pendant, so I had the later ring fitting removed and returned it to the form in which it could be worn, appreciated and protected properly.
And honestly, what a pendant it is.
Four deep crimson garnet cabochons have been individually shaped to fit together like puzzle pieces, creating one gloriously plump, rounded quatrefoil. Cutting stones to meet this precisely is extraordinary work. Rather than reading as four separate garnets, they form an almost continuous, pillowy surface that seems to glow from within.
At the centre sits a tiny pearl within an applied six-pointed gold star, bringing a flash of celestial detail to the rich wine-red garnets. The whole composition is framed in beautifully textured ropework 15ct gold, giving the jewel even more depth and definition.
Garnet cabochons adorned with pearl or diamond stars were a particularly romantic Victorian design. This example feels floral and celestial at once, with the richness and dimensionality that made antique garnet jewellery so distinctive.
It is not a small or apologetic jewel. It is wonderfully puffy, intensely coloured and exceptionally well made, with a presence that is immediately apparent when worn. The conversion back into a pendant also means it can now enjoy a much gentler life around the neck, rather than being subjected to the daily impact faced by a ring.
A genuinely spectacular piece of Victorian craftsmanship, sensitively restored to a form that allows its remarkable design to be the entire point.

Please note
The expectation with antique and vintage jewellery is that there will be normal signs of wear commensurate with age eg. scuffs and patina. Lovers of antique and vintage jewellery usually value these things for giving their piece history and character.
I make every effort to clearly list any defects above usual wear, and to take clear photos that represent the item clearly.
The photos constitute part of the description and we ask you view them carefully before purchasing.
