18ct Gold

Antique Chunky 1883 Mizpah Ring (Q/8.5)

Antique Chunky 1883 Mizpah Ring (Q/8.5)

This is not a delicate little Mizpah. Crafted in solid 18ct gold, it’s properly chunky. Thick through the band, wide on the finger, and very obviously there. The sort of ring you notice even from across the table. There’s nothing flimsy about it, which makes sense when you consider what it was meant to represent.

The word “Mizpah” is picked out in a beautifully decorative script, softened by that classic bloomed finish. It gives the gold that slightly matte, almost velvety glow Victorian pieces do so well. Not shiny in a modern way, more of a quiet, worn-in richness.

Mizpah jewellery comes from Book of Genesis 31:49, essentially meaning “may God watch over us while we’re apart.” In the Victorian era, these weren’t just romantic. They were deeply emotional objects, exchanged during long separations, whether that was travel, war, or just life getting in the way.

And yes, there is a slightly juicier side to them.

While many were exchanged between husbands and wives or family members, Mizpah pieces also became popular among lovers who couldn’t publicly acknowledge their relationship. Think secret engagements, long-distance affairs, or relationships that had to stay hidden for social reasons. In those cases, a ring like this worked perfectly.

So you’ve got this interesting duality. On the surface, it’s about protection and reunion. Underneath, sometimes it’s about longing, secrecy, and “we’ll find our way back to each other eventually.”

This one, with its weight and presence, leans even further into that. It doesn’t feel like a casual token. It feels intentional. Like someone really meant it.

Please note

The expectation with antique and vintage jewellery is that there will be normal signs of wear commensurate with age eg. scuffs and patina. Lovers of antique and vintage jewellery usually value these things for giving their piece history and character.

I make every effort to clearly list any defects above usual wear, and to take clear photos that represent the item clearly.

The photos constitute part of the description and we ask you view them carefully before purchasing.

Instalment Payment Info

We offer a traditional layaway system – not a buy-now-pay-later setup like Klarna. You pay a 30% deposit now, then two more payments over 60 days. Your piece is safely reserved, and we’ll post it out once all payments are complete.

At Trash Lobster, we think this is a more ethical way to offer flexibility – no credit checks, no predatory lenders, just time to pay at your own pace.

Want to pay it off early? Just give us a shout and we’ll sort it.
